The long-anticipated free-to-play MMORPG Ni no Kuni: Cross Worlds has finally arrived worldwide as of May 25, 2022. A combination between acclaimed animation powerhouse Studio Ghibli and South Korean developer Netmarble, the game is available for mobile devices and PC players, though it is still in beta for PC and requires a log-in from a mobile device first.
Although this is certainly not the first and likely not the last Level- 5 Ni no Kuni to be published, Cross Worlds is the first multiplayer open-world title in the Ghibli universe that people can freely explore. Under the premise that players enter the game through virtual reality machines, called Soul Divers, they quickly learn that this is much more than augmented reality and must tame familiars and team up with allies in order to restore peace. Truly, this is Netmarble's most ambitious project yet, as this new game drastically varies from the singleplayer role-playing and social card iterations that came before.

While every title released under the Ni no Kuni banner has been a visually beautiful experience with similar characters and storylines, they are overall separate from one another. Rarely are there any mentions or references to previous games, though it has happened. For example, a puzzle in the early scenes of Ni no Kuni: Revenant Kingdom II relays the events of the first Ni no Kuni: Dominion of the Dark Djinn, and players may also find a statue of King Tom later in the game.
