New casting details for The Witcher season 3 reveal the show is in danger of repeating a Geralt and Ciri mistake from season 1. Inspired by the popular fantasy novels and short stories by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski, The Witcher is a dark and violent fantasy series starring Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia — the titular Witcher — and Freya Allan as Ciri, his ward, a young woman who has inherited the power to transform the entire world. The Witcher has proven a hit for streaming giant Netflix, although the show's popularity belies a raft of narrative problems within the series.
The Witcher season 1 was a rather disjointed affair, in part because it was based on Sapkowski's short stories. A core problem for The Witcher season 1 was that Geralt and Ciri were kept separate for the entire season, meaning the series never got to explore their key dynamic from The Witcher video games. In this way, The Witcher season 2 was an improvement, but even this second season's narrative separated the pair for a good stint. Still, The Witcher season 2 did end on a more hopeful note, with the show's entire dysfunctional family — including Anya Chalotra's Yennefer of Vengerberg — finally together. Naturally, this has led to much excitement that The Witcher season 3 will finally show what the trio is capable of now they're setting their differences aside and choosing to work together.
