New trademarks have been filed for the horror game from Suda51 and Swery65
New trademark applications related to the horror game from Goichi Suda and Hidetaka ‘Swery’ Suehiro have been registered.
The No More Heroes creator (who often goes by the name Suda51) teamed up with the Deadly Premonition creator (often known as Swery65) during an IGN Japan stream in 2019, when the pair announced they wanted to make a horror game called Hotel Barcelona.
Suda said in July 2021 that the duo still planned to make the game together, and recent trademark filings suggest that hasn’t changed.
As spotted by VGC, Suehiro’s White Owls studio registered Japanese trademark applications for ‘Hotel Barcelona’ and ‘Death Game Hotel’ on March 25, 2022, both of which are active.
And on October 27, international trademark applications for both titles were also registered and are currently pending.
The trademarks cover goods and services including computer game software, virtual reality headsets, computer hardware, audio playback devices, and personal digital assistants.
It’s unclear if the trademark applications are indicative of an imminent announcement, but they show that work related to the project is going on behind the scenes.
Discussing ideas for the game in 2019, Suda and Suehiro said it would potentially feature multiple timelines, have a “100% evil protagonist” and have a murder-mystery element where people would be killed in the hotel referred to in the title.
They said the project was inspired by the Siren series from PlayStation‘s now closed Japan Studio and that it would be “easy to pick up” for players.
The pair also said they potentially wanted Devolver Digital to publish the game, causing the indie publisher to tweet that it knew nothing about it but was keen to receive a pitch.
