Publisher Sony Interactive Entertainment recently filed a trademark for Knack, leading some to wonder if the platformer might eventually return. Famously designed by PS4 and PS5 architect Mark Cerny and developed by the now-defunct Japan Studio, the original Knack hit store shelves in late 2013 as a PS4 launch title. The action-packed adventure invited players to grapple with relatively simple controls against challenging foes as a character who could grow from a Spyro-sized hero to a colossal behemoth.
Despite the pedigree behind the project's development, Knack did not review well upon launch. Users were also largely unimpressed by the colorful platformer. It sold pretty well, however, thanks in large part to its release alongside the PlayStation 4 hardware. Still, many expressed nothing short of surprise at Sony's release of Knack 2 in September 2017. Given the sequel's commercial failings in Japan and the dearth of information about its sales elsewhere, there's no need to wonder why a Knack 3 didn't launch with the PS5 in November 2020. But new developments suggest the platformer could still have some juice left in the tank, after all.

As evidenced by a listing on Chizai-Watch (via Gematsu), Sony Interactive Entertainment filed a trademark for Knack in Japan on March 17. The filing itself doesn't reveal much in the way of concrete details, though some seem to believe this could hint at the brand's eventual return. Trademark filings and renewals admittedly mean little to nothing in the grand scheme of things, however. For example, publisher Take-Two Interactive renewed the trademark for Rockstar's Agent game multiple times before finally abandoning it.
