Netflix and Sony Pictures are co-producing a new Ghostbusters animated series. According to Variety, the series will be executive produced by Ghostbusters: Afterlife's Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan, with Reitman also directing.
All other details about the untitled Ghostbusters animated series are still not yet known, though it is being speculated that Reitman and Kenan will not be writing the series. If the project makes it to an official series order, it would be the third animated series of the franchise following ABC's The Real Ghosbusters in the '80s and Extreme Ghostbusters in 1997.
Just as Ghostbusters: Afterlife hit theaters in late 2021, Kenan told GameSpot that there were already plans for a sequel. «We have lots of ideas about how this story can develop,» Kenan said. «There are lots of surprising ways that the future and the past [of these characters] can grow together, side-by-side and separately. And we've had long conversations about how that can happen. But we're totally excited by the fact that by the end of Ghostbusters: Afterlife, audiences are invested in a new set of characters as worthy companions to the pantheon of ghostbusting.»
In GameSpot's review of the film, Chris E. Hayner wrote that Ghostbusters: Afterlife «strike[s] a balance between action, family-friendly levels of horror, and a comedic tone that doesn't overpower the story. There are some decent scares in the movie, but nothing that should be too overwhelming for younger audiences.»
In April this year, a new Ghostbusters video game was announced for virtual reality. Revealed during the Meta Quest Gaming showcase, Ghostbusters VR (working title) is a new project in the works for Meta Quest 2.
