Mortal Kombat (2021) tells the story of Cole Young, a character not found within the game franchise who accidentally becomes a part of the Mortal Kombat tournament where fan favorites like Sonya Blade, Liu Kang, and Kano fight to protect Earthrealm from an Outworld invasion.
Despite a positive reception from fans, the latest Mortal Kombat movie was not generally enjoyed by critics. This led to many questioning whether a sequel to 2021's Mortal Kombat was in peril. However, now it seems that another film is on the way. According to recent reports, Simon McQuoid, director of the first film, will be coming back to helm Mortal Kombat's sequel. So far, not much has been shared on the project, as it still appears to be in the early stages of creation, but some information has managed to slip through to fans.

Reptile, for example, had a human design when he first appeared in the game series, before a retcon decided he was actually a member of a humanoid race of reptilians, perhaps better fitting his name.
