Mille Bobby Brown reveals that Steven Spielberg's E.T. was her favorite '80s movie that she watched to prepare for Stranger Things. Debuting in 2017, Netflix's Stranger Things quickly became a major hit and recently debuted the first 7 episodes of its supersized season 4. The show chronicles the journey of Eleven (Brown), a young girl with superpowers who befriends a group of nerdy youngsters after escaping a sinister government lab.
Stranger Things is beloved for a number of reasons, including its strong cast, horror, humor, and impressive creature effects, but also in large part due to its nostalgic 1980s setting. The first season of the show takes place in the summer of 1983 while most of the action in season 4 is taking place in 1986. While Stranger Things has forged its own path with exciting new characters and ideas, it also continuously references and draws from 1980s films. Stranger Things creators the Duffer Brothers have previously cited E.T., The Goonies, Stand By Me, Carrie, Halloween, and A Nightmare on Elm Street as major influences, just to name a few.
