Meteor shower lovers are in for a grand treat this week! The stunning Perseids meteor shower is here and will peak in the next couple of days. The night of August 9 witnessed a few stray fireballs in the night which were identified as Perseids. For the unaware, Perseids is one of the most prolific annual meteor showers which can be seen across the sky between August and September. Perseids meteor shower originates from the comet Swift–Tuttle. The meteors are known as the Perseids because the point from which they appear to hail is in the constellation Perseus. It is known as the best known meteor shower and among the most reliable in terms of performance, according to the American Meteor Society.
SpaceWeather.com reported the onset of the meteor shower on its website. It said, “Earth has entered a stream of debris from Comet Swift-Tuttle, source of the annual Perseid meteor shower. We're only on the outskirts of the stream now, but already Perseid fireballs are streaking across the night sky. The shower will peak in bright moonlight on Aug. 12-13 when Earth touches the densest part of the debris zone”.
The best way to enjoy the meteor shower is through unaided eyes as the fireballs streak through the sky, but if you cannot do that due to light pollution in your area or because you want a closer look at the meteor shower, then there are a couple of ways you can watch it.
