Meta is more than just a Metaverse company and its Portal video-calling device could soon be updated with an AI that allows human-like interactions. Smart speakers and displays already exist, of course, but it quickly becomes apparent that even the best digital assistants can be woefully inept with a level of communication that would be simple with another person. That's what Meta is aiming to improve with its latest artificial intelligence system which uses a different learning technique than most others.
When it comes to smart speakers and displays, Google Home and Nest are generally recognized as having the most intelligence in terms of understanding natural language and responding appropriately. Amazon is a close second with its Echo devices, with Apple's HomePod trailing. Google Assistant can usually handle greatly varied and complex statements but misunderstandings happen a little too frequently for the responses to sound like a human is helping.

At the recent Meta AI event, an advanced natural language system was introduced. Called CAIRaoke, it's built using self-supervised learning, a relatively new machine learning technique that requires no pre-existing model to gain knowledge. The results might even surpass what Google Assistant can do, with the demonstration showing a back and forth between a person and an AI that suggests the computer understands the context of speech seemingly as well as a human. Of course, this was just an example of what might be possible, and Meta isn't releasing such a robust solution immediately. The system is currently being tested with Meta's Portal video-calling devices and is expected to eventually roll out
