From the first Kingdom Hearts to the end of Kingdom Hearts 3, there's always been a dark element lurking in the background. Despite the game being about teaming up with some of your favorite animated characters, the threat of the Heartless and coming destruction are constant concerns that are never completely out of mind.

You'll have to face a lot of powerful monsters to save all of your friends and every realm, so you'll need to get stronger. This can be done by leveling up through experience points from battling and by equipping found or crafted items, including those made by the ominous Sinister material.
A staple of the Kingdom Hearts series is the ability to craft or synthesize different materials to create consumable items and powerful equipment. You'll find lots of materials from exploring the world, opening chests, and getting drops from enemies. Among these materials is the Sinister variety which appears as having a dark red hue and flavor text that describes them as having an evil effect over those who possess them. Sinister materials come in four different forms.
Aside from being able to use these materials for unique synthesis, once you have all the different types you can take them to the Moogle. As a reward for your efforts, they'll give you a Defense Boost which will allow you to increase any character's Defense Stat by one point.
What makes Sinister different from other types of materials is that they're exclusively obtained through monster drops. Some of them also have fairly low chances to drop so be prepared to do a fair amount of grinding if you're hoping to stock up.
To get Shards, you'll need to defeat common Unversed enemies known as Floods.
