Dead Island 2 is alive. Apparently it always has been, with Deep Silver reassuring fans on a number of occasions that the open world zombie blockbuster is still in the works, and one day we might actually be able to play it. That day is closer than expected, with a recent Amazon listing pointing towards a February 2023 release date.
The thing is - I played this years ago. If I recall it was at the Eurogamer Expo in Birmingham, and there was a small, heinously unfinished demo to sample that was a rather dire sign of things to come. Chances are this was an entirely different vision of the game we might be playing next year, sporting the comedic, cel-shaded aesthetic of the reveal trailer with a focus on over-the-top weapons and character archetypes that never took themselves seriously.

Remember the original Dead Island? It wasn’t very good. The iconic reveal trailer was something Techland had little to do with, meaning the finished product did an awful job of replicating its masterful sense of drama and skilled approach to storytelling. It was a largely forgettable and goofy open world zombie game that quickly became a chore to progress through. Ironically enough, it still tried to take itself seriously with its writing and atmosphere despite the characters all being cliche stereotypes and the game opening with a certified banger known simply as Who Do You Voodoo Bitch. I’m kidding, it sucks so much ass.
You could even find the hotel room from the reveal trailer in the finished game. There is no quest or meaningful narrative purpose to seeking this place out, just a couple of flimsy corpses lounging around that we were expected to be moved by. It didn’t
