While viewers of CW’s Legacies know how most supernatural creatures got their powers, the question of how the originally human Ethan Machado (Leo Howard) got his powers is a bit more complex. Legacies’ host of super-powered teens would produce envy and inspiration in anyone, but even more interesting than those who are born with gifts are those who are not. How they interpret and react to their abilities or lack thereof always provides a brilliant source of dramatic tension and character growth, and none more than Ethan.
While Ethan didn’t appear in Legacies until season 2, he often had a complex, interlocking relationship with the Salvatore students, even when he didn’t know it. Despite multiple memory-loss incidents where Ethan discovered the existence of the supernatural world and was then compelled to forget, Legacies paid off this mistreatment of Ethan by allowing him to forge deep, enduring relationships with several of the school’s students. From his friendship with MG (Quincy Fouse) to his crushes on Hope and Lizzie, Ethan often connected with the supernatural students, and, just as often, found himself embroiled in the danger surrounding them.

Ethan’s interactions with the Salvatore students finally culminated in Legacies season 4 when he was possessed by Malivore and turned into a drone. While under the entity’s thrall, he helped capture and possess multiple townspeople and students, and eventually headed back to Mystic Falls High School, where he was confronted by MG.
