The hammer of Thor is known by Marvel fans and casual followers of the character alike as a mighty weapon that only he can lift — but in actuality, anyone is capable of wielding Mjolnir if they use a specific technique. Powerful in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (and exceedingly more so in the comics), the hammer can only be lifted by Thor or anyone else who happens to be «worthy» of the honor. How exactly Mjolnir determines who is worthy is an oft-debated subject — but it's also unnecessary, as Thor #26 reveals any character can hold the hammer without being worthy at all.
In Norse mythology, the hammer Mjolnir is simply too heavy for anyone other than Thor to lift, but over the centuries, the story evolved and even super-strong entities couldn't lift the weapon. In the current Marvel Comics version, Thor is capable of lifting the hammer not because of his strength, but because he has been deemed 'worthy' of the honor. The magic enchantment placed on Mjolnir by Odin reads«Whosoever holds this hammer, if he be worthy, shall possess the power of Thor.» In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the enchantment is only placed on the hammer after Thor is banished to Earth, but the version seen in comics has always held the limitation.
