It’s hard to think of a more seminal pair of shooters than Half-Life and Doom (except for maybe Unreal Tournament). Both have inspired hundreds, perhaps even thousands of mods and fan creations, some of which have even turned into full games in their own right.
Half-Life: Another Story might just be the first time I’ve seen someone try to recreate Half-Life in the Doom engine. The mod currently has a demo available on ModDB (with thanks to GameSpot) that showcases the first few levels, and Half-Life fans will definitely get huge Opposing Force vibes.

For those who weren’t around for the first Half-Life, Opposing Force was an expansion pack made by Gearbox Software (a developer better known for the Borderlands franchise). The expansion starred a US Marine corporal sent to the Black Mesa facility, only to get caught up in the terrible calamity where scientists opened a portal to another dimension and caused an alien invasion.
Another Story is similar in that the player also starts out as a soldier separated from their platoon at Black Mesa during the incident. They have to fight their way through powered-down and destroyed scientific laboratories, killing head crabs, zombies, and Vortigaunt in order to escape Black Mesa.
What really brings Half-Life into this mod isn’t so much the setting but the sound effects. So many of the sounds featured in Another Story are taken straight out of Half-Life, from the flashlight and footsteps to the gunfire and zombie groans. The 2D sprites are also very accurate representations of Half-Life’s baddies, and even the gun animations look and feel like Half-Life more than Doom.
Everything is created in GZDoom, a game engine built on Doom 2.
