Following a screening of Baz Luhrmann's Elvis biopic, director Guillermo del Toro points out a connection between the legendary musician and the DC comics superhero Shazam. Winning a Best Director Oscar for his 2017 film, The Shape of Water, del Toro has earned a reputation for his unique talents behind the camera. However, his career has also shown that he enjoys comic books, having helmed several adaptations, including Hellboy, Hellboy II: The Golden Army, and Blade II. With that background, the director couldn't help but see a comic book connection with Elvis.
Elvis is the forthcoming biopic about the life and career of the iconic rock and roll star. Directed by Luhrmann, whose previous work includes 2001's Moulin Rouge! and 2013's The Great Gatsby, Elvis has the same unique look and pace the director has become known for, while grounding it within a true story. Austin Butler stars as Elvis Presley, alongside a cast that includes Tom Hanks, Olivia DeJonge, Kodi Smit-McPhee, David Wenham, and Dacre Montgomery.
