Author George R.R. Martin originally had a cameo in Game of Thrones’ pilot — here’s where he would have appeared and why it was cut. As the scribe of the adapted A Song of Ice and Fire novels and numerous Game of Thrones episodes, George R.R. Martin was keen on making a cameo appearance throughout the show. While he did eventually have a cameo in Sharknado 3, the author never appeared in the hit show he was responsible for creating — but it wasn’t for a lack of trying.
Game of Thrones became increasingly notable for its celebrity cameos as the popularity of the show (and its budget) increased, with figures like Ed Sheeran, Aaron Rodgers, Rob McElhenney, and even the controversial showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss. D&D and Martin tried to work in ways for him to appear on Game of Thrones, but the perfect opportunity never presented itself. Martin initially wanted to cameo in a bloody death in season 3’s Red Wedding but the producers felt it would be too distracting, then when the showrunners offered him an appearance in Game of Thrones season 8, the author couldn’t schedule it in because he was writing the yet-to-be-published Winds of Winter novel.

Sadly, the one scene where Martin could have appeared in the on-screen world he created was cut from Game of Thrones’ pilot. He had filmed a cameo in 2009 for Game of Thrones episode 1 as a guest at the wedding of Daenerys Targaryen and Khal Drogo, where he was completely dressed up in costume as a Pentoshi nobleman. Martin explained in his blog that he was given an “enormous hat and really big balls,” which was meant as a tongue-in-cheek comment on his role behind the scenes. The original unaired Game
