Google Maps Plus Codes support for Home Addresses rolled out in India

Google Maps Plus Codes feature has been rolled out in India. It will allow users to save and share their home addresses with ease. A limited Google Maps Plus Codes feature was already there as it was rolled out in India way back in 2018. However, it was used mostly by businesses, NGOs, etc. But now this feature has been extended at the individual level that includes home addresses as well. Plus Codes comprises a set of 6 or 7 letters and numbers along with the name of the town or city for the particular address. Plus Codes feature does not use street and locality names, instead it uses latitudes and longitudes.

Google has said that people can use Plus Codes addresses to send a location to friends or family to help them get to your home, or while navigating, without going through the hassle of sharing approximate addresses with landmarks, or voice instructions.

Google in its blog post mentioned, “We piloted this feature in India a month ago, and are thrilled to share that over 300,000 users in India have already found their home address using Plus Codes.” They also wrote that they are planning to expand more types of places, with e-commerce, logistics, and delivery companies, to scale up the experience to more people across the world.

Upon saving a ‘Home’ location on Google Maps, users will see a prompt asking them to “Use current location”. Upon clicking on that, the app will use their phone’s location to generate a Plus Code, which can be used as their Home address. Google has also added a ‘Saved’ tab to make it easier to retrieve, copy, and share the home addresses.
