This year marks James Bond’s 60th anniversary and it’s believed that Microsoft is celebrating it by revealing a GoldenEye 007 remaster.
The odds of classic Nintendo 64 shooter GoldenEye 007, based on the James Bond movie of the same name, ever seeing a re-release always seemed impossible. The closest fans have ever got to it was when the cancelled HD remaster for the Xbox 360 was uploaded online last year.
There has been rampant speculation of a more official re-release happening and now insider Jeff Grubb says it not only exists, but that it will be announced in the very near future.
Speaking on his GrubbSnax show (as transcribed by VGC), Grubb believes Microsoft, which owns GoldenEye developer Rare, will unveil the remaster within the next couple of weeks. VGC has also corroborated this information, having heard it from one of its own sources.
The timing of such an announcement would make sense since 2022 marks the milestone anniversary of the franchise, after the release of Dr No in 1962. A GoldenEye remaster would be a perfect way to celebrate the occasion.
Logically, with Microsoft announcing it and owning Rare, the remaster would release for Xbox platforms. There is already evidence to suggest this, as a list of Xbox achievements for the game were spotted online earlier this year.
It has been theorised that the game could be added to the Nintendo Switch’s online service as well. Nintendo was the original publisher, so its approval is needed for any GoldenEye remaster to be released.
Nintendo and Microsoft have developed a close working relationship over the years, as evidenced by the addition of Rare’s Banjo-Kazooie, another N64 game originally published by Nintendo, to the Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack.
