George R.R. Martin Puts House Of The Dragon Sweetspot At 4 Seasons
He may keep book readers waiting, but Game of Thrones creator George R.R. Martin sure loves to update his fans on what his outlook is for the franchises that have spawned from his best-selling A Song of Ice and Fire novels, including House of the Dragon.
In this case, Martin's latest thought on House of the Dragon's future comes not from an interview, but rather from the author’s own blog, where he often shares his views on a diverse range of topics, whether it’s his self-criticism as a blogger or rare updates on The Winds of Winter. Previously, Martin has said he always wanted Game of Thrones to last at least 10 seasons, however, it looks like House of the Dragon may go on closer to his desired lifespan.

In a new October entry titled “Random Musings,” Martin wrote about the shrinking runtime TV shows have had since his childhood, and how The Sopranos' 13-episode seasons helped give more exposition than Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon's 10. Regardless of that, he did give a specific number he’d like to work with for House of the Dragon. “It is going to take four full seasons of 10 episodes each to do justice to the Dance of the Dragons,” Martin wrote, though he didn’t specify if that included the 8 episodes that have already premiered.
Martin also addressed House of the Dragon's divisive time jumps, calling them a necessity due to time constraints. He promised a longer post on the matter eventually, although he commended how showrunners Ryan Condal and Miguel Sapochnik have handled them.
