Fortnite has got rid of building. While scrapping the one thing that makes your game unique among a thousand battle royales may seem like a bad idea, players seem to be enjoying it so far. Developer Epic Games has added in a bunch of new movement mechanics to fundamentally change the game for nine days, and one of these in particular has clear Apex Legends influences.
While the parkour is cool, it’s Fortnite’s sliding that feels directly inspired by EA’s rival battle royale. This in turn is taken from Titanfall, but you know what I mean. I get it, Epic. I also think that Apex’s sliding mechanic should be implemented in every game from The Last of Us to Stardew Valley, because it’s the most fun thing to do in any video game.

Before Fortnite slid onto the copycat train, however, Call of Duty: Warzone added redeployment towers that straight up ripped off Apex’s balloons. A modern-day shooter could have had all manner of devices to launch you into the air, but instead Activision landed on ziplines, the exact same thing that Apex Legends has. I’d take it as a compliment! Well done Respawn, you must be doing something right if your rivals are copying you. But in turn, could Apex take something back from the likes of Fortnite and Warzone?
What’s the crux of Fortnite now that building has been taken away? Character crossovers? Apex Legends players have been requesting crossover skins for a while now - either references to Titanfall characters, or characters that EA already has the license for, like Star Wars.
