Guerrilla Games added a new gyro aim feature to Horizon Forbidden West that transforms the DualSense controller into a bow and arrow. Of course, gyro controls have existed for years, though they often felt like little more than a gimmick. In recent years, however, they've arguably become much more sophisticated, evidenced by the use of gyro in an experience like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Even Fortnite features gyro controls on Nintendo Switch, PC, PS4, PS5, and Android platforms.
Despite their prominence during the PS3 and PS Vita era, motion controls took a backseat for PlayStation during the eighth console generation. The first Uncharted title boasted gyro, for instance, so, too, did Uncharted: Golden Abyss on Vita. Understandably, the gimmick's increasingly bad reputation meant no such options were available in the likes of Uncharted 4. As an assistant aiming mechanic, gyro still managed to wiggle its way into a couple of things here and there, though. Gravity Rush 2 on PS4 included motion controls, due in large part to their prevalence in the first entry on PS Vita. And Golden Abyss developer Bend Studio added similar controls for the DualShock 4 in Days Gone. Might gyro make a comeback this generation?
