Square Enix have even more plans for Final Fantasy 7 beyond the remake, according to a 25th anniversary message.
Today marks the 25th anniversary of Final Fantasy 7 and, to celebrate it, the original game’s director, Yoshinori Kitase, and character designer, Tetsuya Nomura, shared a special message for the occasion.
Both Kitase and Nomura, who also serve as project producer and project director, respectively, on the Final Fantasy 7 Remake, have briefly reflected on the game’s legacy and thanked fans for their support. Kitase mentions being grateful for Japan voting the original Final Fantasy 7 as its third most popular game of all time.
However, the big takeaway is that more Final Fantasy 7 related projects are in the works, beyond what has previously been announced. As Nomura mentions, battle royale spin-off The First Soldier is already available and Final Fantasy 7: Ever Crisis, a mobile retelling of the entire Final Fantasy 7 chronology, is still in development.
What any of these new projects could be is a complete mystery but fans are likely more curious about the status of the rest of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake project.
The 2020 game only covered the first portion of the original game and we have yet to see any footage or learn anything meaningful about the sequel. It’s not even clear how many instalments Square Enix intends to release for the remake project, especially considering how much the story has already deviated from the original.
The success of the remake could potentially see some of the old spin-off games, like Crisis Core and Dirge Of Cerberus, receive a similar treatment or simply be re-released, but it’s entirely possible that these mystery projects aren’t necessarily video game related.
