A clever Elden Ring player mimicked an NPC soldier to trick a PvP invader, scoring free loot without engaging in bloody combat. Elden Ring has quickly captivated millions of fans, topping the sales charts since release while simultaneously beating out top sellers like Horizon Forbidden West. The game was ranked #1 on Steam and Xbox, and landed the #2 spot on PlayStation, becoming the best-selling game of 2022. What makes this achievement even more impressive is that the game could be considered quite unfriendly to new players, as Elden Ring is filled with fearsome enemies that provide a hefty challenge.
On top of terrifying NPCs, Elden Ring also includes a challenging PvP system – much like previous Dark Souls games — that allows players to invade another’s online-enabled game world. Unlike the Souls-like games before it, however, Elden Ring slightly changes the multiplayer mechanics, letting invaded players prepare for their enemy by summoning allies to their aid if the invader doesn’t use a particular item. This places the invader on more even footing with their prey. That said, PvP can often pose a difficult challenge, especially since NPCs are not antagonistic to invading players, and can be used to their advantage. For unsuspecting or unprepared players, Elden Ring’s PvP system can completely derail a play session.
