With Doom Eternal being the newest entry in the Doom series, it has continued to expand on the world of the 2016 Doom remake. The core concept is still the same which keeps gameplay fast and chaotic. You're still playing the lone soldier only known as Doomguy whose mission is to eliminate all the forces of Hell with whatever weapons and tech he can get his hands on.

While he's certainly more than capable of handling things on his own, it's good to have some power-ups to give you an edge. Throughout the game, you can find Runes that can make quite a difference in tough situations.
Doom Eternal continues the established traditions of its older predecessors while adding a modern flair to it. This includes the availability of instantaneous power-ups that take effect as soon as you pick them up. More modern are the passive and active accessories called Runes that are scattered in different areas. They're obtained from mysterious floating structures called "Makyr Devices" which appear as glowing stone totems. As soon as you collect your first Rune, you'll unlock a Rune slot for a maximum of three.
There are nine runes in the base game and three that are exclusive to the Ancient Gods DLC for a total of 12. This means that there are 12 effects available, but you'll need to choose the ones you want. However, the DLC runes are equipped on top of your active runes, so you don't need to worry about swapping them out. All runes have passive effects on your gameplay, save for one that uses energy.
Every time you collect a rune, you get to choose between one of three abilities that it will grant when equipped. They can be found in the following areas: Exultia, Cultist Base, Doom Hunter
