New Australian-inspired simulation game Dinkum has been released for PC via Steam in Early Access this week, offering a new take on the classic genre. Farming simulation games have had somewhat of a renaissance in recent years, with many developers offering their own takes on the classic mechanics first introduced in games like the Harvest Moon series. Set in an outback-like region, Dinkum lets players build a town from the ground up in a unique new setting filled with curious creatures.
Although there's a large variance between different farming simulation games, almost all share a few of the same core qualities. Elements of community, customization, and agriculture are central themes that make the genre incredibly appealing for many players. Dinkum was first announced during the Summer of Gaming event earlier this season, teasing an outback take on a simulation game with unique animals and plants inspired by the region. From the initial announcement, Dinkum appeared to offer a mix of realistic in-game farming mechanics and town building with slightly more fantastical elements of creatures and exploration.

Dinkum was released on Steam in Early Access on July 14, 2022, and was met with overwhelmingly positive reviews. Dinkum — which is Australian slang meaning authentic or genuine — starts players out in the middle of an Australian-like outback area sleeping under the stars in the deserted wilderness.
