DeLorean Offers First Look at Alpha5 Electric Vehicle

Texas-based DMC teased the development of a new sports car during February's Super Bowl, offering little more than a glimpse at a silhouetted silver body and the hashtag #ElectricVehicle. Another teaser image was then released in April. Most people recognize the DeLorean name due to Doc Brown's DMC-12 flux capacitor-based time machine from the Back to the Future film franchise.
Despite its cinematic popularity, only about 9,000 DMC-12 vehicles were built before the first DeLorean Motor Company in Northern Ireland went bankrupt in 1982. The new DeLorean Motor Company, founded in 1995, acquired the original firm's remaining parts inventory and logo trademark, with plans to support DeLorean owners through service, restoration, and the sale of new old stock.
The production of a new electric DeLorean, however, marks a shift into the modern world of EV manufacturing—with an old-school twist. Based on the prototypal DMC-12, Alpha5 "is for people that love to drive," DeLorean CEO Joost de Vries said in a statement.
Boasting an estimated top speed of 155 mph, the sports car promises more than 300 miles of range, a 100-plus kWh battery, and zero-to-80 acceleration in 4.35 seconds. DeLorean's Alpha5 launch edition is set to premiere this August(Opens in a new window) at the 71st Pebble Beach Concours d 'Elegance automotive event in California.
