David McCallum has been part of NCIS from the very beginning, and here's his personal favorite episode. NCIS debuted in 2003, and while it was something of a slow burn, it eventually became a ratings sensation. The show also had humble origins, with the titular Naval Criminal Investigative Service originally appearing on two episodes of long-running legal drama JAG during its eighth season. The episodes «Ice Queen» and «Meltdown» first introduced Mark Harmon — who almost replaced Don Johnson on Miami Vice — and his team of agents.
This includes David McCallum as Dr. Donald Mallard, AKA «Ducky.» McCallum was already a TV icon long before NCIS, having appeared in the '60s spy series The Man from U.N.C.L.E. and cult sci-fi show Sapphire And Steel. Mallard was the team's Chief Medical Examiner and was (in)famous for talking to the bodies he performed autopsies on, including episodes like «Dead Man Walking,» — except in that case the «corpse» he was speaking with was a Navy lieutenant named Roy (Matthew Marsden), who was dying instead of dead and was amused by his odd banter.

McCallum has dialed back his workload on NCIS in recent years, with Ducky moving from Chief Medical Examiner to historian. It makes sense that the actor, who is currently in his late 80s, would want to ease up Ducky's NCIS appearances, where he's now one of the few remaining original cast members. Having appeared in hundreds of episodes of the procedural, it's a little surprising David McCallum's favorite NCIS episode comes from season 1. He told TV Insider in 2018 his favorite is «My Other Left Foot,» the twelfth episode of season 1.
