Your first base will probably be just a short walk from the Core, where your journey started. You might even have decided to incorporate the Core Chamber into your new home. Using this central location as your primary hub is a great idea for several reasons.
First, the area around the Core is the safest area in the game. You'll never have to deal with mobs more dangerous than Slimes, and the Dirt and Sand Walls make excavating and renovating a snap.
Second, expanding your starting base is much less work than starting a new one from scratch elsewhere. By keeping your resources and facilities near the starting area, you can focus on upgrading rather than relocating.
Lastly, if your Explorer dies you'll respawn at the Core. Having your base nearby ensures that you can easily re-equip yourself for the journey to collect your lost items.
