The last time MJF was on AEW television, he cut one of the most memorable promos in company history, and since then it has been radio silence from both promotion and talent. That was on June 1, hot on the heels of a loss to Wardlow at Double Or Nothing. Prior to that match, Friedman had no-showed a fan event and rumors were swirling that he might not be at the pay-per-view either.
He appeared at the PPV, took 10 powerbombs from the now-TNT Champion, and got stretchered out. MJF then opened the June 1 episode of Wednesday Night Dynamite, where he called Tony Khan a «f***ing mark» before screaming into the camera that he wasn't happy in AEW and wanted to be fired. CM Punk chased him off during the commercial break, and when Dynamite came back on the air, the announce team essentially acted as if nothing had happened. Friedman hasn't been seen or heard from since. Not on social media and not on television.

In the August 1 edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer broke down a handful of situations that are keeping some of AEW's top talents off the air. As for Friedman, he wrote that "nobody knows what’s up with MJF." He noted that with Bryan Danielson back and Kenny Omega seemingly working an angle with Will Ospreay online, MJF and CM Punk are the two biggest names still very much on the shelf for AEW.
At this point, it seems like the winds are out of the sails of the MJF vs. AEW angle. All Elite fans have tremendously long memories and gave Wardlow and HOOK outstanding ovations even though their title wins probably came later than they should have due to Forbidden Door and Death Before Dishonor needing to be built.
