Following the Russian invasion of Ukraine, carriers in the U.S. and in Europe are now waiving roaming and international long-distance charges for phone calls and text messages to and from the country. This is not the first time that carriers have made a decision like this, with a similar pausing of charges usually in effect for areas impacted by sudden natural disasters. Back in 2020, many ISPs also suspended data caps when the global pandemic resulted in many more people having to work from home.
While an incursion by Russian troops into Ukrainian territory was expected for weeks, a full-scale attack still took many tourists, students and other foreign nationals living in the country by surprise. With many foreigners, including those from the U.S., the U.K. and other EU nations, unable to get out of the country in time, being able to keep in contact is of the utmost importance.

Carriers in the U.S. and Europe are now helping their customers keep in touch with their friends and relatives in Ukraine, and without having to worry about roaming or long-distance charges. T-Mobile is one of the companies that's waiving the charges for phone calls and text messages to and from Ukraine for both prepaid and postpaid customers. The company, on Thursday, announced that the free calling and texting support will be available to all T-Mobile and Sprint individual and business customers from Feb. 24 through until March 3rd. This includes calls made to local numbers within Ukraine for roaming customers from the U.S.
