Nothing, the startup from OnePlus Co-Founder Carl Pel, is signaling it’s ready to expand beyond wireless earbuds to new product categories.
The company has scheduled a March 23 event, and it sounds like a product roadmap will be revealed. “It was always about 2022,” Nothing says. “2021 was just the warm up.”
“We landed investments. Partnered with the best suppliers. Built a 300 people-strong team. Launched our first product which sold over 400,000 units. All of that in one year. So what’s next?” the startup adds. To find out, Nothing is inviting interested consumers to tune in on March 23 at 9 a.m. EST.
On Wednesday, the company also revealed it secured another $70 million in Series B funding. “This is a lot of fuel for our next steps. And we’re showing you what they are in the Nothing (event): The Truth,” the startup wrote on Twitter.
The company's first product, the Nothing Ear (1), is best known for the transparent casing around the earbuds. The resulting product received an “excellent” score from us for offering strong audio quality and solid noise cancellation for only $99.
It’s a good bet Nothing is preparing a smartphone, considering Pei made a name for himself at OnePlus, which has become a popular Android handset vendor. Earlier this week, a photograph also began to circulate showing Pei holding a mysterious smartphone-like device while talking with Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon.
Coincidentally, the website for Nothing’s March 23 event includes a picture showing Qualcomm’s Snapdragon logo.
