The unnamed sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild has been pushed back to 2023, but a new snippet of the footage has made fans excited about what's to come in the game. The announcement that BOTW 2 is delayed to 2023 included a trailer, showing Link holding what appears to be a broken Master Sword. It's unclear how the Master Sword was broken, considering it's supposed to be the ultimate weapon against evil, but its destruction fixes a major issue that the game would have faced regarding gameplay and its story.
The Master Sword is the weapon that's most associated with Link and it's the one he uses in crossover appearances. It was originally the Goddess Sword until Fi and the version of Link from Skyward Sword reforged it into the Master Sword, which is used to defeat Demise. The Master Sword has appeared in most of The Legend of Zelda games, where it's used to defeat Ganondorf or one of the other antagonists of the series. In most cases, Link needs to perform some great deed or complete a quest to unlock the Master Sword, such as collecting the three Spiritual Stones in Ocarina of Time.

There have been several Legend of Zelda games with direct sequels and these faced the issue of Link starting the game with all of his high-level gear from his last adventure. These games came up with different reasons as to why Link isn't loaded down with powerful weapons and items, such as him being adrift at the start of Phantom Hourglass.
