Wordle was a breakout hit in 2021 and continues to see massive popularity. Its success has inspired a small army of programmers to try their hands at designing similar games, or clones. One only needs to search Google Play or the iOS App Store to find a plethora of these Wordle clones.
While many of these Wordle spinoffs may be considered knockoffs, many others attempt to add their own unique spin to the formula. The recently released Bookdlefalls into the latter category, being a literature-themed puzzle game based on Josh Wardle’s popular formula.
Summle is a New Math Game Inspired by Wordle
Created by Hannah Park and Chase Wackerfuss, Bookdle is open about its status as a Wordle clone, acknowledging as much in its “how to play” section. Players have six chances to guess a five-letter word, just like Wordle. It highlights correct letters in green, with yellow marking letters that appear somewhere else in the word. However, its unique selling point is that all of the words are literature-related. These include the name of authors and characters, as well as titles of books and poems.
As with Wordle, Bookdle encourages players to share their scores on social media. Of course, the literature theme means that the game may not have the broad appeal of the one that inspired it. While some Wordle answers can easily be somewhat obscure, Park and Wackerfuss explicitly designed Bookdle as a game for avid readers.
