After a series of delays, Dwayne Johnson's long-awaited Black Adam movie is finally hitting theaters on October 21, exactly four months after the launch of the antihero's newest ongoing comic book series.
The Black Adam movie adapts characters and concepts from SHAZAM! and the Justice Society of America for the big screen, with the latter also seeing a renaissance at DC Comics starting in December. Black Adam, or Theo Teth-Adam, is also a featured character in DC's current Dark Crisis on Infinite Earths event, in which he's the only member of the Justice League to survive total annihilation by the villain Pariah. The event will launch a new editorial era known as the Dawn of the DCU next year, in which Black Adam is sure to play at least some part.
Though Black Adam is becoming even more of a mainstay for DC comic book readers, he's remained much less well known outside of comics. But the character has a history stretching all the way back to 1945, to a time before DC was even DC (it was still going by the name National Publications) when Black Adam was owned by Fawcett Comics, one of National's biggest rivals.
Johnson's Black Adam film seemingly focus on the character's more recent history since his revamp and revitalization in the late '90s, when he was first an enemy and then a member of the Justice Society. Several other members of the team - like Hawkman, who appears in the first full trailer, as well as Cyclone, Doctor Fate, and Atom Smasher - will also appear in the film.
With so many decades under his belt across multiple publishers and through numerous revamps, Black Adam's history and lore can be somewhat difficult to piece together, like the ancient myths from which his story takes its inspiration.
