Biomutant is finally getting a free upgrade for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S later this fall, complete with enhanced graphics and new features. This quirky action RPG was released last May and put players in the role of a fully customizable traveler and their faithful robot companion in a colorful post-apocalyptic world filled with anthropomorphic mutated animals — a striking departure from some of the development team’s previous work on the gritty Just Cause games. Aside from picking out their species and character archetype, Biomutant allows players to choose their own moral alignment through a Light/Dark Aura system that is shaped by the decisions they make as they journey through a branching storyline that is told by an offscreen narrator.
Despite this charmingly outlandish premise and the inspiration the game draws from past open-world RPG blockbusters like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Biomutant was met with lukewarm reviews due to its basic combat and repetitive puzzle-solving gameplay — though it sold extremely well in countries like Japan and the UK when it first launched. There haven’t been any major DLC expansions for Biomutant outside of an additional Mercenary character class that was made available shortly after the base game’s launch, with developer Experiment 101 and publisher THQ Nordic instead focusing on raising Biomutant's experience level cap and adding an option to turn off Biomutant's voiceover narration.
