Will’s most heartbreaking line from Fresh Prince is made even sadder in Bel-Air due to his more tragic circumstances. Along with rehashing Fresh Prince season 3’s election storyline for Uncle Phil, Bel-Air season 1 has brought back one of the original sitcom’s most notable plot points early on. The end of Bel-Air season 1 depicts Will and his father, Lou, confronting one another after 13 years, with the reboot’s dramatization making the young character’s response much more upsetting.
Although known for its lighthearted, comedic approaches to social topics and family life, there were certain occasions in which Fresh Prince dropped the humor and completely focused on the emotional complexities of its characters. Perhaps the most notable instance of Fresh Prince’s dramatic moments comes from the season 4 episode “Papa’s Got a Brand New Excuse,” which sees Will and his father, Lou, reunite after he abandoned him as a child. After spending the day bonding, Lou disappoints Will yet again and walks out of his life. In the episode’s last few moments, Will memorably sobs into the arms of Fresh Prince's Uncle Phil and asks why his father doesn’t want him.

The Bel-Air season 1 finale takes a deeply emotional turn after Will and Lou finally discuss the reason behind why he’s been absent from Will’s life. After initially blaming prison, his pride, or Vy, Lou eventually shows his true colors, and Will realizes that his father had nothing but thin excuses for never calling him.
