Beginning this summer, passengers in some Audi vehicles will be able to immerse themselves in virtual reality games, films, and interactive content through a partnership with Holoride
The luxury vehicle maker plans to demonstrate the new technology at this week's South by Southwest (SXSW) festival in Austin, Texas. Eventually, commuters (who aren't driving) will be able to spend their journeys partaking in what Audi called "a thrilling game experience."
"Through this partnership, we're continuing to turn vehicles into moving theme parks and adding purpose to everyday commutes by making transit time count," a Holoride blog post said.
Wearing a compatible VR headset (connected wirelessly to the car via Bluetooth, passengers can enjoy an experience that reacts to the journey. If the car takes a right turn or accelerates, the VR spaceship in which you're travelling, for example, will also veer right or speed up. Known as "Elastic Content," this VR or XR (extended reality) adventure adapts to the driving route, movements, and time.
From June 2022, select Audi models—A4, A5, A6, A7, A8, Q5, Q7, Q8, e-tron, , e-tron Sportback, e-tron GT—with third-gen modular infotainment toolkit MIB 3 and the latest software cluster, will be "holoride-ready." It's unclear exactly what games will be available at the start, but Holoride tipped a collaboration with Schell Games, as well as new alliances with Arvore Immersive Games, Tripp, Magnopus, Preloaded, SpiceVR, FreshFX, Future House Studios, and Mediasquad.
