Apple AirTag is used by people to keep a track of their belongings like wallets, bags, and more. However, what if we tell you that the device has been used to track or stalk a person too! According to a report by Reuters, Apple AirTag has been used by an ex-boyfriend to stalk girlfriend. And the woman has even filed a case against Apple Inc for the same. "Apple Inc has been sued by two women who said its AirTag devices have made it easier for their former partners and other stalkers to track down victims," the report by Reuters read.
The women said in a proposed class action filed in San Francisco federal court that Apple has been unable to protect people from unwanted trafficking through AirTag since launching what it called the 'stalker proof' device in April 2021.
Meanwhile for the uninitiated, AirTag is an easy way to keep track of your stuff. All you need to do is attach it to your keys, backpack, among others. They are on your radar in the Find My app, where you can also track down your Apple devices. AirTags are available at a starting price of Rs. 3490.
AirTag sends out a secure Bluetooth signal that can be detected by nearby devices in the Find My network. These devices send the location of your AirTag to iCloud — then you can go to the Find My app and see it on a map. The whole process is anonymous and encrypted to protect your privacy.
However, apart from using the device to track their belongings, privacy experts and law enforcement have said some people use AirTags for criminal or malicious purposes. According to Reuters, Apple did not immediately respond on Tuesday to requests for comment.
