The Epix streaming service will be rebranded as MGM+ next year, marking Amazon's first major change since acquiring Hollywood studio Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer in March.
The new logo and name will debut on Jan. 15, in conjunction with the season three premiere of Forest Whitaker's Emmy-winning crime drama series Godfather of Harlem.
"MGM is one of the most iconic and beloved brands from the golden age of entertainment," Michael Wright, head of MGM+, said in a statement(Opens in a new window). "This rebrand is a promise to existing and new viewers that MGM+ is the place to find television that reflects and celebrates the legacy of the iconic MGM brand—cinematic programming with sophisticated storytelling that entertains, delights, surprises, and transports."
Epix launched as a premium pay TV channel in 2009 via a joint effort from Viacom, MGM, and Lionsgate. MGM fully acquired it(Opens in a new window) in 2017 for $1 billion and launched a standalone Epix streaming service in 2019 for $5.99 per month. (Lionsgate content ended up on Starz, which was recently rebranded(Opens in a new window) as Lionsgate+ overseas.)
Epix teased a slew of new programs coming soon to the MGM+ originals lineup—Narcos-esque Hotel Cocaine, Downton Abbey-like Belgravia: The Next Chapter, a docuseries about the Amityville House murders, and a look back at San Francisco's 1960s/70s music scene.
Streaming service rebrands are nothing new. Amazon's IMDb TV is now Amazon Freevee, CBS All Access became Paramount+ last year, and HBO Max and Discovery+ are merging into one, still-unamed service in 2023.
