Amazon is making it easier to watch movies and TV shows with your friends remotely by expanding the availability of Watch Party to more devices.
The Prime Video Watch Party feature allows up to 100 people to watch a show together while having a chat. However, as TechCrunch reports(Opens in a new window), until now you needed to use a desktop browser, Fire TV device, or the Prime Video app on iOS or Android to partake. That's no longer the case.
Amazon has expanded the options to include smart TVs, streaming devices, including Roku's range of players, and even Xbox and PlayStation games consoles.
The feature is still only accessible to US viewers, though, and anyone attempting to use a VPN to bypass the location lock will be met with an error message. Watch Party also requires a Prime membership or Prime Video subscription, and while all participants share access to free content, individuals must pay extra for movies and TV shows only available to rent or buy.
You don't need an Amazon Prime subscription to host a remote movie night, though. Various browser extensions let you stream Netflix and HBO Max as a group, while Disney+, Hulu, Twitch, and other platforms have their own built-in group-watch features.
