The Professor Layton series was extremely popular on the Nintendo DS and 3DS, with over 17 million units sold by June 2018.
The first four games – Curious Village, The Diabolical Box, The Unwound Future and The Last Specter – were released on the DS.
These were followed by two more games, The Miracle Mask and The Azran Legacy, on 3DS.
Level-5 also teamed up with Capcom in 2012 to release the crossover title Professor Layton vs Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney, which took elements from both series.
The most recent game in the series was Layton’s Mystery Journey: Katrielle and the Millionaires’ Conspiracy, which was released on 3DS in 2017.
However, this game focused on Layton’s daughter Katrielle, rather than the detective himself.
In a brief statement on the game, Nintendo said: “In the newest entry in the beloved series, Professor Layton will face new puzzles in a fresh setting.
“Solve epic riddles as you progress through the story of this puzzle-fantasy adventure. Stay tuned for more details in the future.”
