2 of the Biggest Names in 3D Printing Merge
Two of the most well-known names in the world of 3D printers have completed a merger(Opens in a new window) and will now be known as UltiMaker.
Both MakerBot and Ultimaker count over a decade of experience behind them in developing desktop 3D printers, but decided to join forces to continue creating 3D printing hardware, software, and materials.
The existing brands of MakerBot Method, MakerBot Sketch, MakerBot Replicator, and MakerBot CloudPrint will continue to be offered, as will the Ultimaker 2+ Connect, Ultimaker S3, Ultimaker S5, and Ultimaker S5 Pro Bundle. UltiMaker also decided to continue running the Ultimaker Cura and MakerBot Thingiverse communities separately.
Longer term, the product lines of both organizations will be consolidated. It's unclear what that means exactly, but I wouldn't be surprised if new products switch to using the name UltiMaker, while MakerBot and Ultimaker lines eventually become legacy products. There is also going to be a new focus to "amplify R&D efforts" and develop new products for education and professional customers.
