are swinging in, and critics are going bananas for Neon’s upcoming horror comedy. Buzz suggests the Stephen King adaptation has found the perfect balance of chuckles and chills.
The film currently holds a 90% score on Rotten Tomatoes, with just 21 reviews having been published as of the time of this writing.
However, those 20 reviews have been overwhelmingly positive, with many praising the Oz Perkins film as funny and chaotic. Jeff Ewing of the That Hashtag Show dubbed The Monkey “brilliant, bold, bloody,” and said it was “easily among the best horror-comedies we’ve had in years.” Brian Tallerico of Roger Ebert heralded the film for having no “fat” on it, and being all about the simplicity of a toy monkey causing chaos.
On Bloody Disgusting, Meagan Navarro said the film had a “playful spirit,” and said a horror movie like it has “never been funnier or gorier.” AV Club’s Katie Rife called the movie “part Gremlins and part Final Destination” and praised the film’s ability to stay comedic throughout.
The Monkey will be released in United States theaters on February 21, 2025, from Neon. “In The Monkey, when twin brothers Hal and Bill discover their father’s old monkey toy in the attic, a series of gruesome deaths starts occurring all around them,” a description of the movie reads, per Deadline. “The brothers decide to throw the monkey away and move on with their lives, growing apart over the years.
