is moving forward at Warner Bros. as the studio is now eyeing Bird Box’s Susanne Bier to direct the film.
The original Practical Magic was released in 1998. Based on the 1995 novel of the same name by Alice Hoffman, the film was directed by Griffin Dunne and stars Sandra Bullock as Sally Owens and Nicole Kidman as Gillian Owens.
In June 2024, it was announced that Practical Magic 2 was officially in the works with both Bullock and Kidman returning to reprise their respective roles.
There’s been little news about the project since then; however, Deadline is now reporting that Warner Bros. is in negotiations with Bier to direct the sequel.
The screenplay for Practical Magic 2 is penned by Akiva Goldsman, who co-wrote the first movie. Bullock and Kidman both serve as producers alongside Denise Di Novi.
Bier worked with Bullock on Bird Box, which was released by Netflix in 2018. She also directed Kidman in The Undoing, an HBO miniseries that premiered in October 2020, and Netflix’s The Perfect Couple.
Having also worked on 2016’s The Night Manager and 2022’s The First Lady, Bier’s filmography further includes 1993’s Family Matters, 2000’s Once in a Lifetime, 2004’s Brothers, 2006’s After the Wedding, 2007’s Things We Lost in the Fire, 2012’s Love Is All You Need, and 2014’s Serena, among other titles.
A release date for Practical Magic has not yet been announced.
Practical Magic, meanwhile, is currently available to rent or purchase on streaming platforms such as Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV+, and more.
