Disney has finally announced the Disney+ release date for its latest animated adventure, which serves as a sequel to the acclaimed 2016 original movie.
Despite receiving mixed reviews, the film still managed to earn a worldwide gross of over $1 billion at the box office, making it one of last year’s highest-grossing movies. “The film reunites Moana and Maui three years later for an expansive new voyage alongside a crew of unlikely seafarers,” reads the film’s official synopsis. “After receiving an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors, Moana must journey to the far seas of Oceania and into dangerous, long-lost waters for an adventure unlike anything she’s ever faced.” Moana 2 will officially be available for streaming on March 12, exclusively on Disney+.
Compared to the first installment’s Certified Fresh rating, the sequel garnered a much lower critical score on Rotten Tomatoes with a Tomatometer rating of 61%.
The voice cast includes Auliʻi Cravalho as Moana, Dwayne Johnson as Maui, Temuera Morrison as Tui, Nicole Scherzinger as Sina, Rose Matafeo as Loto, David Fane as Kele, Rachel House as Tala, Alan Tudyk as Heihei, Awhimai Fraser as Matangi, and more.
