PlayStation Plus Premium update is great news for PS1, PS2, PSP fans

Sony has quietly made changes to its PlayStation Plus Premium lineup, much to the delight of retro gamers. Since PS Plus relaunched in 2022, those paying for its highest priced subscription tier have been able to access a growing pool of revamped Classics, selected from a library of PS1, PS2, and PSP software.

Through emulation, these games aren’t just playable on newer Sony consoles, they also come tagged with some pretty cool features with up-rendering and video filter options, as well as the ability to quick save, and even a handy rewind. What’s made some of these upgraded PlayStation Plus Premium Classics particularly appealing is the addition of trophies. Not only are you getting a big nostalgia hit, you’re also hoarding more virtual silverware for your in-game feats.

There’s a caveat, however. While some of these older games offer full trophy support, others simply don’t. Typically, if it’s a game that was developed by one of Sony’s first party studios there’s a good chance there will be trophies up for grabs – look at the upgraded Syphon Filter trilogy, for example.

With that said, a small number of PlayStation Classics have quietly received an update adding trophy support with recent examples including Toy Story 2, Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare, or Oddworld: Abe’s Exoddus. Hopefully this is an indication that other titles previously added to PlayStation Plus Premium will get the same treatment.

Sony hasn’t directly addressed this, though it seems to be taking trophy support more seriously when it comes to its Classics catalogue. This can be seen with the arrival of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Tomb Raider: Legend, and Sly Raccoon which have all been outfitted with full trophy lists.

Out of the gate, Sony’s Classics catalogue didn’t make PlayStation Plus Premium an essential purchase though over time it has continued to grow. Even if you’re not a trophy fiend, the handy rewind and save features adds an extra layer of playability to suit modern gamer
