There has been a bit of a boom lately to see video games adapted into movies and television series. We’ve seen these adaptations in the past, but there were far few solid releases. So now it looks like something is finally connected with these productions as filmmakers sought to closely retain the source material and the creators behind the beloved IPs. One of the hits that did well was the cinematic adaptation of Uncharted. While sticking closely to the source materials, the film was not a direct adaptation of a particular video game.
Still, the film did incredibly well. Released in 2022, the action-adventure film became one of the top ten highest-grossing video game films of all time. That alone might have persuaded another adaptation or sequel. Now it wasn’t a massive hit that blew everyone away, but it certainly had a strong following, and it’s enough that productions would like to get a sequel. Recently The Hollywood Reporter had the chance to talk with Charles Roven. If you’re unfamiliar with the name, this is Atlas Entertainment’s co-founder, one of the productions attached to the Uncharted film.
During the conversation, a brief question came up regarding Uncharted. With The Hollywood Reporter noting that this film had an impressive box office run, they were wondering if there was still a desire to see a sequel. According to Charles, there is quite a bit of desire with the production as fans enjoyed the movie. But outside of fans, some people who never played the games liked the movie. So it seems like a solid production rather than a movie catering to a smaller niche audience.
Oh yeah! We had a really good time with that movie. The fans really liked the movie, and people who didn’t know anything about the game
