Playing an emulated Wii U game can now be a much more authentic experience thanks to the existence of the Steam Deck and a team of dedicated fans.
Some old gaming systems are harder to emulate than others because they have unique features that software emulation alone can't reproduce. In the case of Nintendo's Wii U, it's the unique GamePad with its own display and support for gyroscope input. However, the Steam Deck turns out to be the perfect device to reproduce the GamePad experience.
As Eurogamer reports(Opens in a new window), the fan-run group known as Steam Deck HQ(Opens in a new window) has been working on a way to allow a Steam Deck to function just like the Wii U GamePad. That way you can have an emulated Wii U game running on a TV, but also utilize the Steam Deck display to act as the second screen and controller.
The latest breakthrough in this modding project is getting the gyroscope to work as the video in the tweet above demonstrates using The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker.
There is now a guide available at Steam Deck HQ(Opens in a new window) explaining in great detail how to enable the gyroscope for Wii U games played using the Cemu emulator(Opens in a new window) on a Steam Deck. And once you have it setup, everything should be automatically configured to work every time you load a Wii U game through Cemu.
