PlayStation's endeavors in the subscription service arena have yet to reach the level of success as Xbox Game Pass, which has arguably been one of the most defining aspects of the Xbox brand over the past few years.
PlayStation Plus is moving to a multi-tier model and merging with PlayStation Now, which many see as an obvious response to Xbox's efforts with Game Pass. PS Plus has offered subscribers a good amount of perks, including multiplayer access, free monthly games, and the PlayStation Plus Collection, which is a consistent, small library of popular and free games. PS Now is a separate service that allows players to download or stream a selection of new and classic titles. Just today, PlayStation announced that these two services would become one, exciting many gamers. However, PlayStation head Jim Ryan noted that, even on the highest tier of the subscription model, subscribers would not be able to access first-party exclusives on day one, which stands in stark contrast to how Microsoft positions Game Pass.
