Square Enix has revealed that the next entry in the Final Fantasy 7 Remake series is called Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, rather than Final Fantasy 7 Remake 2 or Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 2. There is a reason for this and it also explains why the name of the first game might be considered misleading. When FF7 Remake was first announced, it only showed a few seconds of the Midgar section of the game, but this was five years before it was released, so fans assumed it would take a while for more footage to be released.
It turned out that FF7 Remake wasn't quite what the title promised. Square Enix revealed that FF7 Remake would only cover the Midgar section of the original game, which could be completed in a few hours in the original FF7. The Midgar section was fleshed out, with more content and character moments, in order to bring it up to the length of a full game. There were some fans who felt the FF7 Remake name was misleading, as people who don't keep up with gaming news might buy the game and think it's a full remake of FF7 and not something that only covers a short part of the original story.

Square Enix revealed during the Final Fantasy 7 Anniversary Celebration livestream that the next entry in the FF7 Remake series will be called Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, and that it's coming to PS5 in winter 2023. It was also revealed that the game is the second part of a trilogy, with a third game arriving in the future. It might seem strange that the next entry in the series isn't a numbered sequel, like Final Fantasy X-2 or Final Fantasy XIII-2, but there is a reason for this change.
